?Why do Extreme Reactions Occur in Reiki?
We usually only hear all about the positive outcomes Reiki can initiate.
I assure you, I share the real,
the raw and authentic of it all. I ensure my clients and students learn about:
The potential positive benefits
The potential negative symptoms
And that there may be no effects what so ever.
Or at least what appear to be zero benefits.
We all have the right to be informed, and when uniformed it could cause a person to panic, feel mislead or lied to, and make them reconsider whether Reiki or any Healing Modality is for them or not.
As practitioners, we are responsible for informing our clients. This is why I also recommend IN PERSON REIKI attunements. The likelihood of an extreme reaction taking place during the attunement process is increased and can be addressed by a well trained practitioner. We don’t want to be the reason why some one panics where we also lack the ability to hold space for someone in this state. Instead,
IN PERSON training teaches ettiquette when the practitioner is leading by example.
So why do reactions after Reiki Occur?
Did you develop a random rash, headache or flu like symptoms after a healing session or attunement? Did you have an emotional catharsis or cry three days later yet not entirely sure why you are crying?
It’s well known in the Medical industry as the Herxheimer Reaction. It can be early onset or a delayed reaction.
I teach this in my Reiki Level 1 Class.
In Allopathic (Western) Medicine, the Herxheimer Reaction is an immune system response to the toxins released when pathogens are in the process of being killed in your body & are not eliminated fast enough for symptoms to be absent until the process ends.
In the Spiritual Community, we refer to this as the Healing Crisis. It happens when the body is breaking up dense energy so fast that it accelerates the ethereal into the physical for a brief moment while accelerating the body's innate healing abilities.
The Herxheimer Reaction is a sign that healing is taking place and not to be confused with Reiki actually causing these reactions. Make no mistake, Reiki is in fact a gentle healing practice yet these reactions do occur. So we need to collectively be aware and informed. The severity and type of reactions can vary from mild to extreme depending on many factors including;
- How the body releases toxins
- current efficiency rate of elimination organs
- General health
- Current diagnosis
- Current level of emotional and mental distress
- Whether or not you are on a spiritual path
The person receiving gets to decide how they will proceed or discontinue treatments.
Here's What I Recommend
If the symptoms are too extreme (lasting more than 3 days);
discontinue reiki sessions to slow down the process
If symptoms are mild (lasting 2-3 days);
continue Reiki sessions and also,
- Modify food intake to support; eat light, switch to liquids (soups, smoothies and juices),
- Increase water intake
- Rest
- Earthing
- Sun bathe
- Moon bathe
- Water bathe with epsom and/or sea salts or get into the oceans or living body of water.
- Sauna; either dry or far infrared
- Steam room
Remember, sometimes people may feel nothing at all during a healing session or attunement nor after as well. Reiki is a form of subtle energy healing.
